History

In May 2023, under Indra Sjafri, Indonesia U23 went on to win the gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games, their first title after 32 years (the first for the under-23 team) and their third title in history by defeating Thailand 5–2 in the final.

Under Shin Tae-yong, Indonesia U23 managed to qualify for the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup, it was the first time in history for Indonesia to qualify to the AFC U-23 Asian Cup final tournament.

In their tournament debut, Indonesia were in group A with host Qatar, Australia, and Jordan. Indonesia managed to finished as runner-up of the group, thus advancing to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal match, Indonesia defeat South Korea after shootout drama to seal a historic semi-final place. However, Indonesia then scored a hat-trick of failure, losing to Uzbekistan, Iraq and Guinea en route to their Olympic bid, resulted in Indonesia missing the 2024 Olympics at the very painful but acceptable results (since no one predicted them of going to the semifinal from the very start), thus making their fourth place finish at their debut a consolation prize.
